Raymond Lee Perry-- 1936-2016

Raymond Lee Perry, 79, passed away Friday.  He was born May 21, 1936 to Chester Lee Perry and Nellie Mae York Perry.  Raymond grew up in Cordele and El Campo and moving back to the Cordele area to attend school in Ezzell.  He worked on a ranch early in life before honorably serving in the U.S. Navy.  After being discharged, Raymond went back to ranch work for a couple of years before changing careers and going to work in the oil fields.  He married Carolyn Joan Pullin on October 18, 1963 in Choate and continued to work his way through the positions in the oil field finally working as a production supervisor.  Raymond started Perry’s Pumping service where he managed well operations and gauged wells for 25 years.
Raymond loved to fish the lakes and rivers of the area catching catfish and setting perch traps that he made himself.  He enjoyed hunting deer and quail as well.  Raymond was an avid gardener and always gave more of his produce away than he kept for himself.  He enjoyed cooking and delighted in hosting fish fries for friends and family at his home.  Raymond found peace in watching football games on television and found great pleasure being surrounded by family and friends sharing stories and laughter.  Truly Raymond kept himself busy all his life, if he wasn’t working in the oil field, hunting or fishing, he was outdoors working around the house.  Raymond was appointed “Mayor of Dotyville” by family friends LaVerne and Nancy, a charge he upheld with utmost deference for the confidence that was so graciously bestowed upon him.
His wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren filled his heart with love and clearly he filled their hearts with love as well.  He was a fair, loving and supportive father and an amazing Papaw.  He imparted qualities in them that he lived by; hard work, honesty, fairness and unconditional love.  Raymond loved to spend time with his grandchildren teaching and coaching them in life.
Raymond Lee Perry is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Carolyn Joan Perry of Gonzales, sons and daughter-in-law, Chester James Perry McLind of Colorado Springs, Colo; Colin Grey Perry and Donna of Yoakum, Kevin Jay Perry of Gonzales, former daughter-in-law, Tammy Perry of Gonzales, sister, Bernice Davis of Victoria, brothers and sisters-in-law, James Lee and Katherine Perry of El Campo, Floyd Lee and Teresa Perry of Palacious, grandchildren, Chelsea Perry, Stephen Perry (Charmayne), Stephanie Perry, Kyler Dawson, Aden Dawson and Jessica McLind, and six great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Gladys Hagood.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today (Monday)  in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday) in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Remmers officiating.  Interment will follow in Gonzales Memorial Park.  Pallbearers:  Jimmy Selzer, Steve Petty, Bubba Ruddock, James Perry, Jr, Chester Perry and Calvin Koenig.  Memorials may be made to Accolade Hospice, the American Cancer Society or the charity of one’s choice.  Services are under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.

Raymond Otto “Booty” Neitsch , Sr. -- 1926-2016

Raymond Otto “Booty” Neitsch, Sr., 89, of Gonzales, passed away Sunday.  Booty was born September 14, 1926 in Gonzales to Henry Richard Neitsch and Anna Marie Sassmanhausen Neitsch.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Methodist Men, the Gonzales American Legion Post 40, Hermann Sons, the Independent Cattlemen’s Association, Texas Trail Rider’s Association and he was a member of the Dairy Farmers of America.  He helped build the Independence Park Arena while he was a member of the Noon Lion’s Club and he had taught Sunday school at the First United Methodist Church for many years.
Booty grew up on a dairy farm in Gonzales.  He graduated from Gonzales High School with the Class of 1944 and immediately joined the Merchant Marines during WWII.  After the war he attended Texas A&M University before returning home to tend to the dairy after the passing of his father.  Booty married Betty Jean Glass on September 7, 1951 in Gonzales.  He was called to duty in 1951 to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  Booty spent his entire tour of duty on the front lines in Korea and his experiences were never open for conversation.  After he was honorably discharged from the Army he went back to working his dairy until 2007 when the dairy closed.  However the closing of the dairy didn’t mean retirement, there was still 100’s of acres to farm, chickens to raise and cattle to feed in the feed lots.
Booty was a country man, devoted to God, work and his family.  He provided a magnificent example to his family in balancing love of hard work, love of family and most of all love of the Lord.  Though he toiled many arduous hours, Booty found time to ground break, break to ride and shoe many horses through the years for his family to enjoy.  Granted, most of the colts were green broke, but he had faith his children could put a finish on them.  Booty and his family rode in 48 consecutive trail rides with the Texas Trail Riders Association starting in Altair and riding all the way to San Antonio and they participated in weekly Play Days at Independence Park for many years as well.  Booty was a tough but loving father and proud Pawpaw to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  In retrospect Booty Neitsch was more than a hard working country man, man of God, family man or servant to our military forces.  Independently each of these descriptions of a man is honorable in themselves, all together they make the kind of man that honors God and makes the world a bit better.
Raymond O. Booty Neitsch is survived by his daughters, Jeanette and David Pruett, Cindy Neitsch, son, Ray O. Neitsch, Jr and Judy, sister, Amy Rodenburg all of Gonzales, grandchildren, Jay Pruett, Crystal Ehrig (Michael), Bryan Pruett (Shannon), and Tracey Neitsch, great-grandchildren, Connor, Coby, Mason and Jake Pruett and Lawrence Rowdy Ehrig.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Neitsch, parents, a grandson, Michael Neitsch, sister, Olivia Weathersby and brothers, Homer, Milton and Rueben Neitsch.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Andy Smith officiating.  Interment will follow in Pecan Branch – Smith Cemetery.  Pallbearers:  Jay, Bryan and David Pruett, Michael Ehrig, Bryan Glass and Glenn Glass.  Honorary pallbearers: Connor, Coby, Mason and Jake Pruett and Lawrence Rowdy Ehrig.  Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church General Fund or Happy House Pre-School.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home tomorrow (Wednesday) from 5 to 7 p.m.  Services are under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.

Philip Ross McCaskill-- 1950-2016

Philip Ross McCaskill, 65, passed away Saturday.  He was born December 27, 1950 in Fukuoka, Japan to Joseph Marvin McCaskill and Charlotte Fougerat McCaskill.  Phil was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church in Gonzales.  He married Janis Gwen Connell on September 15, 1972 in Gonzales.
Phil was raised in Gonzales and graduated from Gonzales High School with the Class of 1969.  Phil, along with his childhood friend Brad Jones, earned the rank of Eagle Scout through the Boy Scouts of America before graduating.  He attended Blinn Jr. College and Wharton Jr. College before transferring to Southwest Texas State University.  After he and Janis married, Phil went to work in the oil fields before going to work for GVEC in 1973.  He worked for GVEC for 35 years retiring in 2008.  All the while, Phil had been working for the Gonzales Livestock Commission, starting when he was 14 years old and was helping with the Gulf Coast Livestock Commission until it was sold in the summer of 2015.  Phil continued working his farm and enjoying one of his greatest pleasures, gardening.  He maintained a large garden where he grew tomatoes, beans, peas, potatoes, onions and watermelons to name but a few of the plant varieties he would rotate in his annual garden.  Phil gave most of his produce away to family, friends and to GCAM.  Phil was a competitive golfer, unless he faced a two foot putt. Still, he always enjoyed his morning tee times with friends and the Wednesday evening scramble at the Independence Golf Course.  He had the opportunity to play many courses through the years, golfing in Maryland to Las Vegas and throughout Texas and Louisiana. He loved watching and following his beloved sons as they competed in high school golf.  Phil loved to cook, a talent arguably shared with his sons or they shared with him. Either way, he was celebrated for some of his special dishes, namely his chicken and dumplings, pecan pie and especially his very unique and highly touted chili.
Phil was a hardworking man and he instilled that same work ethic into his sons, also teaching them how to have fun while always being productive.  He was a complex man at times, stubborn yet always generous and loving.  He worked hard and managed his finances conservatively and then out of nowhere he would thoughtfully buy his beloved wife a piece of jewelry for no prescribed occasion other than just because.  Phil was a man with many gifts and he clearly followed the words of Pablo Picasso, “The meaning of life is to find your gift.  The purpose of life is to give it away.”  So Phil gave of himself, his talents, his hard work and greatest of all, his love.
Philip Ross McCaskill is survived by his adoring wife, Janis McCaskill of Gonzales, his loving sons and daughter-in-law, Charles Roy and Suzanne McCaskill of Frisco, Joseph Ross McCaskill of Mission, mother, Charlotte McKnight of Victoria, sister and brother-in-law, Rose Marie and Tom Jahnsen of Victoria, brother and sister-in-law, Winston “Bubba” and Angie McKnight of Richmond, grandchildren, Brian Eastwood, Corynne McCaskill, Sean Eastwood and Brennan McCaskill and former daughter-in-law, Elizabeth McCaskill.  He was preceded in death by his father Joseph M. McCaskill, step-father, Winkie McKnight, brothers, Charles and John McCaskill.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday) in the Gonzales Presbyterian Church with Pastor Diana Whitley officiating.  Honorary pallbearers:  Larry Gray, Ricky Kotwig, David Shelton, John Armstrong, Butch Jackson, Jim Avant and the Morning Golfers.  In lieu of flowers, please make memorials in Phil’s name to the Presbyterian Church or the charity of one’s choice.  The family will receive friends from 3 to 4  tomorrow (Tuesday) at the church and after the services in the church fellowship hall.  Arrangements are under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.
