Clare Ann Hall-- 1921-2016

Clare Ann Hall, 94, of Gonzales passed away Monday.  Clare was born March 30, 1921 in Gonzales County to Emmitt Thomas Hall and Mary Elizabeth Young Hall.  She had been a member of the First Baptist Church.
Clare was born and raised in Gonzales and as young girl she had lost both of her parents.  She and her five siblings stayed together with the older siblings shouldering the responsibility of raising the younger children.  An older brother, A.T. “Tubby” Hall opened a café that the older girls worked waiting and bussing tables and used the money they earned to care for the family’s needs and affording the whole family to stay in school and graduate from Gonzales High School.  These times were certainly difficult but never considered a burden, they were a family and the bonds that held them together were bonds of love.  After Clare graduated from high school she went to work for Burchard Abstract.  She later went to work as a secretary for the USDA generally known as the Farmers Home Administration and today as the Farm Service Agency.  Through the years, Clare’s knowledge and professionalism helped many families obtain reasonable loans for housing, farm improvement, water systems, and emergency relief.  She worked in this capacity for 50 years and 6 months, retiring at the age of 78 in 1999.  During the course of her employment she was called upon to fly to Washington D.C. and Oklahoma City to stay abreast of all the changes in government regulations in her particular field.  She was meticulous in gathering information for loan approval and very thorough in the closing of loan contract agreements.  Her office was her office and she dictated much of the office’s business for the sake of efficiencies and to this end she was very successful.
Through the years Clare had saved and scrimped to buy back a large part of the original Young family farm land.  She established a pecan orchard with nearly 150 pecan trees on part of her property.  She was very proud of the orchard, its natural beauty and serene location.  She often drove to the orchard just enjoy the tranquility and rejuvenate her spirit after a hard day at work.  Clare always gave pecans to her family at Christmas; she endeared the fruit of the pecan to love and therefore appropriate gifting to family and friends.  She enjoyed taking an occasional trip to see her family in Tennessee.  Clare had always been a fiercely independent woman with a strong will and completely self-sufficient resolve.  She was somewhat of a private person; she always sought to do things her way and seldom, if ever, asked for help.  Clare was naturally a beautiful lady, as all of the Hall girls were and she dressed elegantly in appropriate length dresses or skirts complete with matching high heeled shoes that added height to her already slender figure.  Truly Clare did things her way, but she did them with style and grace.
Clare Ann Hall is survived by her sister, Katherine Hall Green of Maryville, Tenn.  She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Young Hall, Dr. A.T. Hall, sisters, Mary Hall Dawe and Nell Hall Wilson.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home with her niece, Rev. Mary Wilson officiating.  Interment will follow in the Gonzales Masonic Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 9-10 Friday morning.  In lieu of flowers and plants, the family requests memorials be made to the Gonzales Masonic Cemetery, the First Baptist Church or the First United Methodist Church.  Services are under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.

Oscar J. “O.J.” Behrendt-- 1922-2016

Oscar J. “O.J.” Behrendt, 93, passed away Thursday  O.J. was born September 13, 1922 in Seguin.  He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, a charter member the Gonzales Elks Lodge # 2413 B.P.O.E. where he had served as Exalted Ruler from 1969 to 1970.  O.J. was also instrumental in organizing and obtaining the Charter for the Gonzales Elks Lodge #2413 and having previously been of member of the Seguin Elks Lodge his combined years of membership totaled 62 years.  He assisted in the organization of the Ottine V.F.D and had served as a director of the Ottine Volunteer Fire Department for 10 years and he was also a member of the Ottine Community Association and the Ottine Cemetery Association.
O.J. grew up in Seguin graduating from Seguin High School with the Class of 1941 where he had played football for the Matadors.  Following high school he enrolled in the Texas State Aeronautical Institute in Dallas where he studied aircraft mechanics.  Upon graduation in 1942 O.J. went to work for Civil Service at Randolph Airforce Base as an aircraft mechanic.  He married the love of his life, Patricia “Patsy” Amelda Voigt on April 11, 1943 in Gonzales.  In 1944 they moved to Orange, Texas and he worked in the ship yards repairing aircraft that came home from overseas damaged in battle during WWII or sorely needing repair.  After the war they moved to Ottine on January 2, 1946 as he began a career working for the Texas Elks Crippled Children’s Hospital, now known as Texas Elks Children’s Services, Inc. in Ottine.  He started out as the Maintenance Engineer and retired on March 31, 1988 as the Physical Plant Director after nearly 42 years of dedicated service.
When O.J. found the time he loved to fish, setting trot lines along the beautiful San Marcos River.  He was a formidable domino player and enjoyed competition.  He had little patience for tin horn or novice domino players, O.J. was a competitor and preferred quick play to get as many games in as possible before time called the game to an end.  For O.J. life wasn’t all fishing and dominos, it was his work and the children they helped along the way.  His work ethic was honest and faithful; he kept a garden at home filled with numerous varieties of vegetables.  He worked his farm and raised cattle that helped put his children through school and one through the University of Texas Law School.  O.J. certainly loved his career, his fraternal and civic duties, working the gardens and raising cattle, but it was his wife and family that brought him the greatest joy. He was a family man and was truly enamored by his grandchildren who knew him as their “Papa.”  He loved sports of all kinds and looked forward to watching the Texas Longhorns compete. O.J. was a good man, selfless, generous and faithful, all traits considered honorable; of all of these, his greatest quality was the manner in which he loved his wife, family and community.  Long after the memory of his domino acumen, his fishing ability or his service for the betterment of others, his loving nature will linger still.
Oscar J. Behrendt is survived by his daughter, Debra “Debbie” Kay Behrendt Everett and John of Ottine, sons, Douglas D. Behrendt of Kyle, Gary Lynn Behrendt and Donna of Ottine, Larry Michael Behrendt and Penny of Ottine, grandchildren, Michael Behrendt (Chelo), TSgt. Hiram Truman Parr -- 1920-2016

Hiram Truman Parr, 95, of Waelder, passed away Saturday.  Truman was born May 3, 1920 in Waelder to Adolphus David Parr and Essie Harris Parr.  He graduated with the Waelder High School Class of 1938.  Truman was a member of the First Baptist Church of Waelder where he had served faithfully as a deacon of the church.  He was a member of the Hopkinsville Masonic Lodge No 183 A.F. & A.M.  having served as the Senior Steward of the Lodge.  Truman was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4817 in Gonzales.  Truman married Frances Ellen Low on February 5, 1942 in Lockhart exactly one month before enlisting into the U.S. Army Air Corps where he served as an armored gunner on a B-22 bomber.
Truman’s family moved to his grandfather’s farm south of Waelder when he was young.  He grew up working on the farm that had been in the family since 1881.  He helped his dad and Uncle Herbert work the farm and after graduating from Waelder High School, Truman worked as a carpenter along with his father and uncle in Houston and nearby cities.  In 1942, even though he was recently married, he answered the call to serve his country.  He flew many missions in Italy as an armored gunner aboard a B-22 bomber.  He was proud of his service and often reflected on the missions he shared with his brave crewmates.  There were accounts where the crew found their plane shot up by German artillery and they had to limp home on two engines.  The crew became so enamored by their tough B-22 that when the Army sent another plane to take them home they instead chose to fly their beloved repaired plane home believing that as it had gotten them safely through many missions, they just couldn’t leave her behind.
After returning home Truman and Frances moved to San Antonio where he continued working as a carpenter and later helping to raise their two sons.  He continued to help his dad on the family farm on weekends.  Truman retired from Prassel’s Manufacturing in San Antonio where he had worked in the lumber mill yard.  Truman was very proud of the tall columns he helped construct that still stand strong in front of the former Wells Fargo Bank in Gonzales.  After retiring he and Frances moved to the family farm and built a new home across the driveway from his parent’s old home.  Truman continued the family cattle business with the assistance of his sons and grandsons whom through the years Truman had taught the particulars of working cattle.
Truman Parr was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  He was a fine Christian gentleman and enjoyed sharing his knowledge of carpentry with his sons and grandsons.  He loved the family farm and delighted in sharing his love for the 100 plus year family farm with his family.  He was a very congenial man, always meeting folks new and old with his blue eyes sparkling, his welcoming smile and his warm and firm handshake. Having survived the great depression, a world war, devastating droughts and loss of a son and his wife, Truman’s caring disposition never waned.  Through all this hardship his faith led him to believe that he was never really alone, his Lord was always by his side.
Truman Parr is survived by his son and daughters-in-law, David and Sandra Parr of Waelder, Cheryl Parr of Boerne, grandchildren, Brian Parr and wife Christy, Steven Parr and wife Staci, Justin Parr and Kimberly Parr, great-grandchildren, Kristopher Parr, Madeleine Parr, Zoey Parr and Laekyn Parr along with numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Frances Ellen Parr, son, Richard Parr, his parents and a sister Billie Grace Hurry.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Opperude officiating.  Interment will follow in Waelder Cemetery.  Pallbearers:  Brian Parr, Steven Parr, Terry Parr, Louis Pack, Max Schmidt and Mike McCoy.  Honorary pallbearers include: Justin, Kimberly, Kristopher, Laekyn, Madeleine and Zoey Parr and Tommy Cox.  The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers friends may make memorial contributions to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through www.lls.org or the charity of one’s choice.  Services are under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.
